History
Fastway Couriers was conceived in April 1983 from an idea to operate cost effective
delivery services between Napier and Hastings (New Zealand).
An evaluation of company drivers showed that no new work was being generated by
them. It was then decided that the time was right to introduce franchising, and franchise
couriers were sought. A large number of franchises were established which resulted in far
greater productivity. The franchise courier concept not only provided the incentive desired
but also freed up working capital which enabled the company to develop further
operations and linehaul networks. Never had franchising in the transport industry been
attempted (worldwide) before.
Fastway Couriers now operates in nine countries, and has over 120 Regional
Franchisees and 1600 Courier Franchisees worldwide.

Fastway Couriers' franchise system
Consistently competitive prices, and an easy to use label system with no complicated
formulas or extras forms the basis of the Fastway service. Coupled with the high level of
service provided by Courier Franchisees to their customers, the Fastway's market place
offer in it's totality is unmatched by other transport operators.
In New Zealand two franchise levels are offered, Regional Franchisees and Courier
Franchisees - opportunities available at both levels:
|
|
Regional Franchisee
A Regional Franchise is a total business management franchise, operating a depot and
administration facility within a city, town or region providing business services to Courier
Franchisees. From this depot they employ office staff to provide support to Courier
Franchisees in the areas of administration, operations, sales, marketing, computer
technology and customer service.
|
Courier Franchisee
Courier Franchisees carry out the actual courier work from their vehicle, calling on
their regular customers within their exclusive territory, and working to their own preset
timetable.
|
|
Skills and qualifications required
A Regional Franchise is ideal for a previous business owner or person who has worked
in a middle or senior management level. It is a total business management franchise that
requires a skilled business person with good leadership skills and the willingness to take a
hands on approach.
You will have the opportunity to develop your skills further through a comprehensive
induction programme followed by ongoing support and assistance in every aspect of
running the business.
A Courier Franchisee doesn't require any specific business skills as full training and
assistance is given, but they should possess an outgoing and friendly attitude and a
willingness to give a high level of customer service.

Key to success
The success of the franchised business depends largely on the franchisee using
his/her skills and commitment to maximize the opportunities it presents, implementing
the knowledge gained from the franchisor, and complying with the tried and proven
franchise system.
Testimonial
Award winning Regional Franchisees Graham and Denise Clarke have been with
Fastway Couriers for over 15 years now. Firstly in the capacity of Courier Franchisee for 5
years where the key to their success was the big personality they portrayed, being
customer service focused and being a good communicator.

Then the opportunity to purchase the Fastway Wanganui Regional Franchise was
realised and they have not looked back since. With sales growth being in the double digits
for the last four years, a large volume increase to their customer base and a national
award under their belt (Westpac Franchise Association of New Zealand Master Regional
Franchisee of the Year 2006) the question asked is what is their secret to success? "It
would have to be the combination of compliance within the Fastway franchise system and
the dedicated service we provide", says Graham. "Owning the franchises we have with
Fastway have helped us realise many personal goals also", says Graham. "This year we
have purchased our dream touring bike - Boulevard 1500cc. Next on the list it to take our
two children on a holiday overseas to see the world!"
Courier Franchisee - Bill Sampson
No mountain is too high to climb for Fastway Courier Franchisee Bill Sampson. Since
purchasing his first business with Fastway in 2005, Bill has notched up two prestigious
awards, most recently the Westpac NZ Supreme Franchisee of the Year for 2009/2010,
added another Fastway territory to his portfolio and welcomed his son and daughters into
the business. It is Bill's drive and motivation that are the keys to building and retaining his
customer relationships. His belief in customer service is demonstrated in everything he
does within his business. However Bill likes to describe it as "My customers are my
whanau". Describing his business, Bill says "The job is very active - I'm getting in and out
of the van and speaking to people all the time. The business is challenging but I wouldn't
have it any other way - I love it, plus the bonus is that I remain physically fit all the
time".
